The multi-institution backup prevents owners from locking themselves out:

  1. Order a new phone, create a new phone key and set up a new MISC™ vault.
  2. Transfer funds from the old to the new vault using the hardware and the collaborative custody partner's key

  1. Order new hardware, create a new hardware key and set up a new MISC™ vault.
  2. Transfer funds from the old to the new vault using the phone and the collaborative custody partner's key
Loss of phone and hardware (keys)
  1. Restore the phone key using the cloud backup and the recovery contact(s).
  2. Follow the instructions for lost hardware (key).

Because the backup is distributed among various institutions, no single institution ever gains sole power of disposal.

MISC™ also ensures that heirs do not get locked out:

  1. The owner can encrypt one of their keys using the beneficiary's or executor's key.
  2. The collaborative custody partner will hold that encrypted "inheritance" key in escrow.
  3. The beneficiary or executor triggers the inheritance process when the owner passes away.
  4. A six-month security period begins during which the owner is alerted.
  5. After the six-month security period expires, the collaborative custody partner will give the beneficiary or executor the inheritance key and co-sign a transaction with its key to transfer the estate to the beneficiary or executor.
